At the ceremony, plans were announced to add an additional 6,000 feet of rail and six storage silos to the new facility.

SAN ANTONIO - At the 300-acre Southton Rail Yard, a truck maneuvers into a silo that holds 5,000 tons of sand for hydraulic fracturing. “Pull up about eight feet,” says Chris Colburn, the assistant yard manager at the rail site near Interstate 37 and Loop 410 in southern Bexar County. “Five, four, three, two, one,” Colburn says, counting down the feet as the truck rolls forward. “That will do, driver.”

Southton Rail Yard in Texas celebrates grand opening.
Southton Rail Yard, a 300-acre dual rail-serve facility in San Antonio, Texas, designed for transloading energy-related products, celebrated its grand opening June 11. The Southton Rail Yard officially opened for business and announced plans for phase two of the facility. The second phase of the facility calls for 6,000 feet of additional rail and six new, on-site storage silos.

San Antonio’s Southton Rail Yard, a newly developed 300-acre industrial facility serving the Eagle Ford Shale, has opened for business after pulling in an anchor tenant. The $54 million rail transloading operation - one of the largest of its kind in South Texas - recently landed Sugar Land-based Sandtrol’s seventh Eagle Ford sand-distribution site.
Sandtrol will store up to 20,000 tons of sand in four silos at Southton’s site, located at Loop 410 South and Interstate 37.

Dec. 16, 2013 (SAN ANTONIO) The Southton Rail Yard, a 300‐acre, state of the art facility designed for transloading energy‐related products to the Eagle Ford Shale area, will open for business on San Antonio’s south side in January. The industrial terminal is dual rail-served by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
